An Unfortunate Misstep
Lifted anchor after having coaled taken stores and fresh water and passed through the opening of the huge breakwater at about 9.30pm. Just before moving off we had another taste of the tropical rains which lead to an unfortunate accident. One of the chaps whilst taking a shortcut to shelter slipped down an open hatch way a distance of about forty feet which he had not noticed in the darkness and was so badly injured that he soon died. A ship's quartermaster noticed him disappear and whilst climbing down the ladder to reach him slipped also and fell with the result that three of his ribs were broken.
